When considering outfit choices, consider the location that we will be shooting at. Will it be at the beach? In the studio? On a mountain? Near a waterfall? Depending on the location, the outfit varies slightly.

Next consider your home. You will be placing wall art around the home so you may want to consider if you’d want yellow flowers in the image, or big blue mountains, a green lake? You must consider all these elements when choosing colours. I will be there to guide you through the process and help determine what best suits your family and your home

START WITH MOM

I suggest that we start with mom. We choose an outfit that is flattering, both in shape and colour. I love long dresses and skirts. They are comfortable, free flowing, and add movement in the portraits. Once we have chosen mom’s outfit, we will then move on to the next family member.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Avoid loud patterns as it can be distracting in the image. I am not saying avoid more than one colour in an outfit, but keep away from large patterns. When we have more than one colour in an outfit, it is easy to coordinate with everyone else. Stay away from logos and casual shoes.

COMPLIMENT OUTFIT COLOURS

The best way to coordinate the outfits is by complimenting the colours. Avoid matching the colours but instead find colours that go well together. Once you have chosen a couple of colours, find ways to incorporate at least one of the colours in each outfit while adding texture or accessories to bring out everyone’s personal style.

WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT

Find clothes that fit you correctly and show off your best assets. If clothing is too loose, you look bigger than you really are. If the clothes are too tight, they do not compliment your body in a flattering way. For men, look for dress pants that fit the waist properly and hug the legs. This looks far better than loose pants.

ADD ACCESSORIES

Add accessories to create variety and interest. Examples include suspenders, hats, ties for males; jewellery, hair pieces, and sun hats for women. Don’t go overboard but a few pieces here and there add some visual interest in your photographs.
